Bonifacio was one of the first cities in Corsica. Founded in 830 by Boniface, Count of Lucca, Pisa city became Genoese in 1195.   First single "castle" wood at the current location of Torrione, the Republic of Genoa becomes master of Bonifacio after his victory against the Pisans at the Battle of Meloria. Then begins the construction of fortifications and the foundation stone of military, civil and religious community.   Today, one can see the remains of a Ligurian architecture made of straight and narrow alleys, small squares of different neighborhoods as well as mullioned windows and doors surmounted by arms. Stroll in the old city is a guaranteed change of scenery out of time. Source City of Bonifacio.
