At St. Helena, Napoleon dying remembered the church of his childhood: "If my body is banished, like you banished myself, that you refuse me a piece of earth, I hope to be buried with my ancestors in the Cathedral of Ajaccio in Corsica. " This quote engraved on red marble at the entrance of the cathedral reminds the importance of the place in the life of the Emperor. The baptism the young Napoleon was celebrated on the 21st July 1771. Finally the cathedral housed the funeral chapel of the Bonaparte family until the construction, under the Second Empire, of the imperial chapel. In 1559, the Council of Elders made a request from the Senate of Genoa and of Pope Gregory XIII, Ajaccio to build a cathedral. Replacing the St Croix built in the early fifteenth century and demolished in 1553 to allow the construction of the citaled's ditches. The new cathedral was completed in 1593 and dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin. Cathedral strikes at first by its modest dimensions. The Latin cross plan shows a barely marked transept and three interior naves seem too short relative to their proportions in height and width. But the seven side chapels richly decorated, the imposing dome and especially the baroque facade of a beautiful ocher show an indefinable charm.
