Built in 1439 by Janus Campofregoso, it was one of the first places occupied by Genoa. Hence this village became one of the most important commercial place of the island. In the middle of the village, there is the St. Antoine church, built during the sixteenth century church. Later it was used as a refectory for the French troops.The building to the right of the church and the way up to the castle was the artillery store. The originality of the Citadel was recognized by connoisseurs since 1948 and is listed in the inventory of scenic spots . Today the old and the contemporary blend during the summer season, in this imposing fortress which held exhibitions of paintings, photographs and sculptures. The esplanade of the Citadel, has become a place of cultural encounters through the Porto Latino Music Festival, which takes place early August and provides annual international headliners.
