The fort of Girolata

Erected on the peninsula of Girolata, this fortress was built in the thirteenth century by the Genovese occupying the island at the time in order to protect themselves from the attacks of the Moors. Thereafter, the shepherds, living inner-lands, settled near the fort and founded the village of Girolata. Some herds and wild goats are still circulating in the reserve recalling the time of transhumance. Source: Tourist Office of West Corsica.
