The theater of Bastia

In 1874, works to build a new theater began to replace the one located on the market square dating from the eighteenth century which was destroyed by fire. This work was undertaken by the Italian architect Andrea Scala theater designer of Pisa. It was opened in 1879 and was popular during the Belle Epoque with the inhabitants of Bastia, known for being demanding. The trial of the bandit Spada took place there in 1935. Seriously damaged during the bombing of 1943, the restoration of the building was completed in 1980. Bastia Tourist Office
