The water mills of the Cap Corse

Hidden in the bush, restored or working, water mills are important in the history of the island and the Cap Corse. They were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. They were used to grind grain (wheat and rye), but especially to make the chestnut flour, essential food of the island society until the First World War. In 1829, a survey estimated at 1220 the number of hydraulic mills in Corsica. They demonstrate the importance of the cultivation of cereals: wheat, barley, maize.
