Train station Bastia: the brotherhoods in Corsica

The origin of the brotherhoods dates back from the 16th century. Their spiritual and social role was very significant as their goal was to raise the spirits but also to act as charity in the town. Each brother and his family were assured to be cared for in case of disease and to get decent funerals. The oratory of St Roch used to organise the health service during epidemics. Nowadays some brotherhoods still exist like the St Croix one and the immaculate conception in Bastia, they kept the same principles of solidarity and charity. They look after the oratory and maintain traditions. The locals share their enthusiasm during processions on good Friday and on the 8th December (for the immaculate conception).
