All travellers who have stayed in Bonifacio have a wonderful memory of the town. As Charles V or Napoleon Bonaparte, the writer Anthony Pasquin says Valery, was overwhelmed by the site of Bonifacio. In describing the city as " picturesque capital ," he summed up in two well-chosen words, the extreme thrills and memories that will offer you the "city of the cliffs ." With its ancient fortress, its historic monuments, its houses perched 60 meters above the sea and 120 kilometers of coastline, Bonifacio has something to satisfy every curiosity and satisfy all pleasures. Bonifacio is a real open-air museum. Walking through its streets and walkway, it's a journey back in time . Human presence since the Neolithic and Roman emperors, doges of Pisa and Genoa, Dominican and Franciscan monks, royalty and French republic ... the past Bonifacio has seen many civilizations who have all left many remarkable buildings . The archipelago of the Lavezzi islands is part of the Natural Reserve of the "Bouches de Bonifacio", the largest in France (80,000 hectares). The archipelago consists of hundreds of small islands and the tiny granitic islands. Make sure you follow the trail and leave everything clean! Since it has been protected again, nature is back to normal both on land and under water. In addition to the picnic and binoculars, don't forget your mask and fins. After a nap on the warm sandy beaches, plan a walk to the two cemeteries, and go back in time until the middle of the last century. A shepherd who told the drama, was the only witness of the sinking, unlucky Semillante. It is hard to imagine that the water around you is not always that blue. And yet, the Bouches has swallowed a great number of boats! The lighthouse, erected at the south end of the Lavezzi islands and now powered by solar panels, did not exist at that time. Bonifacio was one of the first cities in Corsica. Founded in 830 by Boniface, Count of Lucca, Pisa city became Genoese in 1195. First single "castle" wood at the current location of Torrione, the Republic of Genoa becomes master of Bonifacio after his victory against the Pisans at the Battle of Meloria. Then begins the construction of fortifications and the foundation stone of military, civil and religious community.
